Adolescent and Child Health Interdisciplinary Team (AHIT)
AHIT aims to improve the health and well-being of children and adolescents in Dona Ana County, southern New Mexico, and the US-Mexico border region. Our members include faculty from NMSU’s Colleges of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences; Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Engineering; and Health and Social Services. AHIT works across disciplines, community organizations and international boundaries to develop new approaches to health disparities and inequalities that affect the youngest, most vulnerable and most promising segment of our population. In its first year, AHIT members have initiated projects to reduce adolescent pregnancy, prevent childhood obesity and improve the health and welfare of undocumented youth. Efforts are also underway to better understand teen sleep patterns, immigrant access to health care, and trends in birth outcomes. AHIT is on track to make novel scientific contributions that will change the quality of life for youth in our region.
